God commands us to walk in the spirit, so it is important to know how to walk in the spirit.
Galatians 5:16: This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:25: If we live in the spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Romans 8:1: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
The bible also calls walking in the Spirit as being filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18: And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the spirit.
So first off we know that to walk in the Spirit must mean that we have the Spirit living inside of us. Unsaved people do not have the Spirit, only saved people have the Spirit.
The bible says that when we trust Jesus in our heart to be our savior that he imparts to us his Holy Spirit. John 3:8: The wind bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. The bible says we are born of the spirit when we get saved. The spirit is just like the wind, we can't see it because it is invisible, but we see what it is doing when we see the tree branches blowing around, etc., and we also feel it blowing on us like a cool breeze or also see the force of it such as in a hurricane. The wind is gentle and it is also powerful at times. In the same manner, when we are filled with the Spirit, we see what it is doing by seeing the fruit of the Spirit in our life. Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23: Meekness, temperance: When we have those things listed above, it is the Holy Spirit working in us.
Furthermore, the Spirit is a person, for the bible speaks of the Holy Spirit as "he," and he teaches us and guides us. John 16:13: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He, the Spirit, is part of the Godhead, which is God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Also in John 4:24 it says "God is a Spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. You can only serve God effectively when you are filled with the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit also comforts us and teaches us the bible. John 14:26: But the Comforter, who is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
So, all saved people have the Holy Spirit inside of them which they received the moment they got saved, but not all Christians are filled with the Spirit. Not being filled with the Spirit is called walking in the flesh. We have two parts of ourselves living inside of us, the Spirit and the flesh. The flesh is the part of us that lives just like any unsaved person lives, but the Spirit is the part that wants to live for God and do everything for his glory. So to be filled with the Spirit you have to pray and dwell in God's word to know what God wants you to do. Colossians 3:16: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17: And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
